Sigiriya (Lions Rock)

• Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka's most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is an ancient rock fortress and palace rising about 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding plains.

  
  

  History

  • Sigiriya was built in the 5th century CE by King Kashyapa I (477–495 CE).

  • According to tradition, Kashyapa seized the throne from his father and built Sigiriya as his royal capital and fortress to protect himself from rivals.

  • After Kashyapa's death, the site became a Buddhist monastery that remained in use for centuries.

  • Lion Gate: Visitors climb through the remains of a gigantic lion sculpture that once guarded the entrance to the summit.
